Course Description

International and Comparative Studies 007 Basic Chinese

An introduction to oral and written Mandarin for students with no previous knowledge of the language. Students will learn approximately 400 characters, 40 or so sentence structures and basic grammar, and will be able to write short passages and conduct brief, informal dialogues. Prepares students for progression to International and Comparative Studies 027. Available only to students with no prior background in any Chinese dialect or written Chinese.

Antirequisites: OAC Mandarin, any training in Basic Standard Chinese or any Chinese dialect.
Prerequisite: Permission of the department based on an assessment of proficiency.
