Course Description

Earth Sciences 341a/b Introduction to Environmental Geochemistry

Effects of mineral stability, adsorption, cation exchange, natural complexing agents, temperature and pressure on metal and non-metal contents of groundwaters. Natural sources of potential pollutants (e.g. heavy metals) and their geochemical cycles. Acquisition of heavy metals by groundwaters, their transportation and deposition in natural environments (e.g., formation of ore deposits).

Prerequisite: Earth Sciences 230b or any second year chemistry half or full course.
2 lecture hours, 1 hour tutorial, half course.
