Course Description

English 201a/b History of Theory and Criticism

An introduction to important issues in the history of literary theory and criticism. Students will read a selection of texts from different periods (Classical and Medieval, Renaissance, Neoclassical and Eighteenth Century, Nineteenth Century, Twentieth Century) grouped under four general topics: Representation; Subjectivity; Form and Structure; History, Society and Gender.

Antirequisite: English 491E.
Prerequisites: At least 60% in English 020E, 022E, 024E or the former English 026, and at least 60% in all subsequent English courses, or permission of the Department.
