COMPARATIVE LITERATURE AND CIVILIZATION

THREE YEAR BA

Admission Requirements

A mark of at least 60% in Comparative Literature and Civilization 020 or permission of the Department.

Program

The equivalent of five full courses in Comparative Literature and Civilization at the senior level (i.e., courses numbered 100-499).

With permission of the Department, one senior course in a related subject may be substituted for one of these five.

HONORS PROGRAMS

Admission Requirements

First year with Comparative Literature and Civilization 020 and two other courses as principal courses. French or a foreign language at the 020 level is strongly recommended as one of the principal courses. If a 020-level language is not taken in first year, it must be successfully completed by the end of the second year.

Students who have obtained at least 60% in Comparative Literature and Civilization 020, with a minimum 70% average in their principal courses and no failures, will be admitted to the program.

Students who have obtained between 65 and 69% in their principal courses may be admitted to the program with the approval of the Department. Consultation with the Undergraduate Chair is mandatory for these, and strongly recommended for all other students.

Second, Third, and Fourth Years

After the first year, 15 courses, including:

  1. a 020-level course in French or a foreign language (if not taken in first year)
  2. a 020-level course in a second, non-English language (this requirement is waived for students who pass an 020-level reading test in this language)
  3. an honors half-course in the untranslated literature of one of the non-English languages studied
  4. Comparative Literature and Civilization 204F/G and 205F/G
  5. at least one of Comparative Literature and Civilization 236F/G or 240F/G
  6. at least one of Comparative Literature and Civilization 250F/G or 260F/G or 270F/G
  7. at least one of Comparative Literature and Civilization 271F/G or 272 F/G or 273 F/G
  8. at least one additional half course from those listed in lines (5) - (7)
  9. at least one course at the 300-level in Comparative Literature and Civilization
  10. at least one course at the 400-level in Comparative Literature and Civilization
  11. three and one half additional honors courses in Comparative Literature and Civilization

Note: With the permission of the Department, the following courses may be substituted for any of the three and one half additional courses:

With the permission of the department, an undergraduate thesis worth a full credit (Comparative Literature and Civilization 410E) may be substituted for one of the three and one half courses mentioned in line (11) above. If approved, the thesis will be written in the fourth year and will be directed and marked by a member of the CLC faculty.

COMBINED HONORS PROGRAMS

Approved Combinations: Anthropology, Classical Studies, English, Film Studies, French, German, Greek, History, Latin, Linguistics, Media, Information and Technoculture, Philosophy, Political Science, Religious Studies, Russian, Sociology, Spanish, Visual Arts, or Women's Studies.
