BUSINESS SCHOOL

THE HBA/BESc PROGRAM

Structure of the Program

The program is administered on behalf of the Richard Ivey School of Business and the Faculty of Engineering Science by the two HBA/BESc Program Directors, one of whom is appointed by the Richard Ivey School of Business and the other by the Faculty of Engineering Science.

Normally, students will apply for the concurrent degree program during their second year in the Faculty of Engineering Science. Applications must be made in writing to Office of the Associate Dean - Academic, of the Faculty of Engineering Science and by the published deadlines of the Richard Ivey School of business for the HBA program. It is the student's responsibility to ensure that a separate application is submitted to the Ivey Business School. Entrance to the program is competitive and limited. Upon completion of the program students will receive both an HBA and a BESc degree.

Below is a brief outline of the program by year. The specifics may change as courses change in each faculty. It is assumed that students do not take more than two years of course work prior to beginning HBA 1.

Years One and Two

To be eligible for the concurrent degree program, students must have completed all the requirements of the first year curriculum in the Faculty of Engineering Science, and the second year program in one of the Departments of Biochemical, Chemical, Civil, Environmental, Materials or Mechanical Engineering. Students must obtain a minimum year weighted average (YWA) of 78% in each year. During the second year of the program students are required to take Business 257. Demonstrated participation in extra curricular and/or community activities, leadership and work experience are also admission criteria.

Year Three

All students must take the HBA1 year in Year Three.

Years Four and Five

Students will take an approved mix of required and elective courses from both faculties in these years. All Business electives must be selected from the 400 level courses in the HBA program.

Progression Standards

Students in this concurrent program must meet the progression standards of each faculty.

Failure to Meet Progression Standards

A student who fails to meet the progression standards in any year must withdraw from the concurrent program. That student may, with permission from the appropriate Program Director, continue in one program and request the Faculty or School whose program was not selected for permission to complete that program at a later date.

Dean's Honor List

Students in the joint program are considered for the Dean's Honor List depending on the faculty in which they are enrolled in any particular year. For HBA only grades obtained in courses taken at Ivey (300 and 400 level) will be used in calculating averages for the purposes of determination of Dean's Honor List standing. This list is typically approximately the top 10% of each section in HBA1 and the top 10% of all of HBA2. It is determined by vote of the teaching faculty. Those who achieve Dean's Honors List over all courses taken at Ivey at the completion of the joint program will graduate as Ivey Scholars.

Graduation with Distinction

Students registered in the HBA/BESc program can obtain distinction in either or both of HBA1 or HBA2 by achieving an 80% average. This designation is independent of the Dean's Honors List. Grades obtained in all courses recognized for credit by Ivey will be used in the determination of "distinction" for joint program students. This includes courses taken elsewhere at UWO during the HBA/BESc program and it includes grades obtained on Exchange.
