Media, Information and Technoculture 337F/G Culture and the Music Industry in the Global Context

The purpose of this course is to investigate the phenomenon of globalization as it relates to both past and contemporary forms of music. The diffusion of recording technology, the increasingly global reach of music industry structures and markets, the hybridization of musical style and rise of World Music, and the politics of local versus global culture and identity are among the topics addressed. Case studies of popular music will be discussed.

Prerequisite: MIT 136/236F/G, and registration in the third or fourth year of an MIT program, or permission of the Faculty.
