Course Description

History 246E The Family in the North Atlantic World since 1500

An introduction to changes in family life since 1500 with regard to demography, structure and "emotional content." Topics may include the internal workings of the family and its relationship to other institutions, particularly the state and the public economy; the influence of race, ethnicity, national traditions, religion, class, and changing constructions of masculinity and femininity. The family in England and North America will be emphasized.
