Course Description

English 244E Nineteenth-Century Literature

The course explores the continuities from the Romantics through the Victorians to the beginnings of the Modern period. Developments in poetry and critical theory from Wordsworth to Wilde, and in the novel from Austen to Hardy, are central concerns.

Antirequisites: English 266E, 267F/G, 268F/G, 276E, 277F/G, and 278F/G.
Prerequisites: At least 60% in English 020E, 022E, 024E or the former 026, and at least 60% in all subsequent English courses, or permission of the Department.
