Course Description

Film Studies 200F/G Film Criticism and Critical Methods

Students will learn a variety of critical methods to move beyond merely watching films to understanding them as active, critically engaged readers. An examination of auteur and genre criticism, introduction to psychoanalytic theory, ideas derived from semiotics, structuralism and feminism will be introduced as methodological approaches to understanding film texts.

Prerequisite: At least 60% in Film Studies 020E, and at least 60% in all subsequent Film Studies courses, or permission of the Department.
2 lecture/seminar hours, 1 3-hour lecture/screening, half course.
