ANCILLARY FEES

The Ontario Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities permits universities to charge certain fees in addition to regular tuition fees. These fees are called compulsory ancillary fees (see below for detailed information about four of these fees). Compulsory ancillary fees are comprised of three components as follows. For specific fees, refer to the fees posted on the website: www.registrar.uwo.ca/fees .

Component A

those which are centrally collected with the basic tuition fees and cover health/counselling, student activity fees, student government fees and non- tuition related fees approved by student referenda.

Component B

those which are approved by student referenda and collected with the centrally collected fees.

Component C

those which are collected separately from the basic tuition and compulsory ancillary fees. The University is also permitted to levy other charges for placement, learning material/clothing retained by the student, production material for items which become student property (e.g., case books, dental kits), field trips and transportation/parking charges. These fees are usually collected by the Faculties and other University offices.

Students who have any questions about whether a particular compulsory ancillary fee falls into one of the above categories and therefore can be charged in addition to their tuition should contact the Chair of the Department or unit charging the fee.

Copyright Fees

A copyright fee is included in the Supplementary Fees portion of your "Registration Fee Bill". Western collects this fee on behalf of, and remits it to, Can Copy, the Canadian Reprographic Collective. The 2001-2002 copyright fee for full-time students was $2.50; a lesser amount is charged to part-time students.

This charge represents part of a licensing fee that is paid to Can Copy to give members of Western's academic community a restricted right to photocopy copyright-protected material. Limits are placed on the amount of material that can be copied, and copied material may be used only for personal study and research.

Distance Studies Supplementary Fee

All students registered in a Distance Studies course will be assessed the non-refundable supplementary fee of $75.00 per course which is assessed in addition to the tuition.

Donation Fees

Full-time students in certain faculties have initiated "Donation Fees" to augment tuition and activity fees. The allocation of these donations is determined by the appropriate student group. The amount of the donation may vary among faculties. The fee, which is included on the "Registration Fee Bill", must be paid in full. If you subsequently wish to opt out of paying this fee, contact the Dean's Office of your faculty before September 30, 2002.

In February 2003, the University will issue an official donation receipt to students who pay the fee. You can use the donation receipt to claim a credit on your income tax return. For further information, contact the appropriate Dean's Office.
