Course Description

Mathematics 302a Group Theory

An introduction to the theory of groups: cyclic, dihedral, symmetric, alternating, matrix, and quaternion groups; subgroups, quotient groups and homomorhpisms, cosets and Lagrange's theorem, isomorphism theorems, solvable groups; group actions and representations, the class equation, Sylow theorems; direct products, the fundamental theorem or finitely-generated abelian groups.

Prerequisite: A mimimum grade of "C" in Mathematics 203b or Applied Mathematics 213b.
3 lecture hours, half course.
