Mathematics 308a/b Rings and Modules

Commutative rings, ring homorphisms and quotient rings, ideals, rings of fractions, the Chinese remainder theorem; Euclidean domains, principal ideal domains, unique factorization domains; polynomial rings over fields; modules, direct sums of modules, free modules; modules over a principal ideal domain, the rational canonical form, the Jordan canonical form.

Antirequisite: The former Mathematics 303b.
Prerequisite: Mathematics 302a.
3 lecture hours, half course.
