Media, Information and Technoculture 236F/G Popular Music as Culture

The purpose of this course is to develop an understanding of popular music as a form of cultural expression mediated by various social, technical and economic forces. The course will introduce students to some of the major theoretical debates in contemporary popular music studies. While the course is not intended primarily as a historical survey of popular music styles, various forms of popular music will be taken up and listened to in relation to larger issues and discussions.

Antirequisite: Media, Information and Technoculture 136F/G
Prerequisite: Registration in the second, third or fourth year of an MIT program, or permission of the Faculty.
3 lecture hours, half course.
