Course Description

Earth Sciences 205a Introduction to Crystallography and Crystal Optics.

An introduction to morphological crystallography and the interaction between crystals and light. Crystal symmetry, Point Groups, Miller Indices and zone symbols are discussed. The use of the polarizing microscope as an orthoscope to observe colour, pleochroism, optical relief, extinction and birefringence, and as a conoscope, to observe interference figures, is explained.

Antirequisite: The former Earth Sciences 210
Prerequisite: Earth Sciences 020 or equivalent; or permission of the Department.
2 lecture hours, 3 laboratory hours, half course.
