Course Description

Earth Sciences 317a/b Synthesis and Characterization of Natural Materials, Glasses, Ceramics and Alloys

Use of phase diagrams, thermodynamic concepts and chemical analyses to determine the stability of natural phases as a function of temperature and pressure. Introduction to various synthesis techniques. Evaluation of analytical techniques to determine the composition and morphology of materials. Prediction of the chemical effects of separating phases using the distribution of elements among phases.

Prerequisites: Earth Sciences 020, 205a and 230b.
2 lecture hours, 3 laboratory hours, half-course.
To be introduced in September, 2003.
