COMBINED HONORS PROGRAMS

Combined honors programs provide students with the opportunity to do concentrated work in two subjects. These programs are more than the combination of two halves of a single honors program but less than the combination of two single honors programs. Consequently, combined honors programs do not in all cases qualify a student for direct admission to graduate work in either principal subject without further course work at the undergraduate Honors level. Students are urged to seek information from the department(s) concerned, or from the Faculty of Graduate Studies Calendar of the university at which they propose to do graduate work. These programs, in general, are accepted by the Ministry of Education of Ontario as the academic qualification for certification at the Honors Specialist level in the two principal subjects but students should consult each Faculty of Education for specific requirements.

Admission Requirements

First-year program in Arts, Information and Media Studies, Science, or Social Science, with three courses as principal courses. The principal courses must include those specified as first-year requirements in each of the subjects in the combined honors program.

Program

After the first year a combined honors program requires six honors courses (except in the case of Classical Studies, Greek, Latin and Visual Arts) from each participating Department plus three options approved by the departments. Additional courses from participating departments may be selected as options and probably should be in the case of students contemplating graduate work in these subjects.

Normally, students enrol in five courses per year, including two honors courses from each participating Department plus one option. All honors courses from participating departments will be considered principal courses for the purpose of determining progression and graduation. The principal courses for each participating Department must be selected from the relevant lists below.

Unless otherwise noted "course", "option", or "full-course equivalent" means one full course or two half-courses.

COMBINATIONS OF HONORS SUBJECTS

A combination of honors courses in two subjects is also available in some departments that will permit a student to study both of them for the first two years at the Honors level and, at the end of that period, to decide, after consultation with both of the departments involved, to take an honors degree in one subject and the equivalent of an area of concentration in the other, during the third and fourth years.

Details of the courses required and the combinations possible may be found in the individual Department sections. These programs should not be confused with combined honors programs.

Interested students should consult their departmental advisors.
