MME 360a/b, Finite Element Methods for Mechanical Engineering
Description: Linear finite element analysis using the direct equilibrium method and the principle of minimum potential energy. Topics include spring and bar elements, two-dimensional truss analyses, beam elements, two-dimensional plane stress/strain elements, axisymmetric elements, isoparametric formulation, and three-dimensional tetrahedral and hexahedral elements. The concepts of heat transfer, fluid flow, and thermal stress will also be examined.

Description: Mechanical Engineering Design team projects to be conducted under the supervision of a faculty advisor. Description: The basic technical and economic criteria for the design of efficient energy conversion systems are introduced. The principal traditional (steam, hydro and wind) as well as alternative (solar, Ballard) power systems are modeled. Strategies for increased energy efficient and environmentally friendly operation are developed. Design alternatives and selection criteria are studied based on long-term economic viability and overall energy management strategies.
