BACHELOR OF ARTS, FAMILY STUDIES

PROGRAM STRUCTURE

The BA Family Studies is an interdisciplinary program which includes specific courses in Family Studies and approved courses from other disciplines. Students complete required core courses and choose from a list of approved options offered by various departments and programs.

In the first-year core course, Family Studies 020, students encounter the great variability that exists in family structures and roles through time and space and the many different perspectives from which families are analyzed. Students are challenged to examine their own definitions of "family" and their own experiences in a wider context. A second core course, Family Studies 200, focuses on Canadian family issues and includes a section on research methodology. In addition to the fourth year core courses, students choose, in consultation with an academic counselor, from a list of approved options offered by various departments and programs to develop a degree program that will meet their academic and future professional goals.
