Linguistics 028a/b, Linguistics: Applications and Extensions
Description: Acquaints students with human language and how it relates to society and to the mind. Topics include applications of linguistics, such as language acquisition, language and law, language disorders, and language variation across time, space and society.
Prerequisite(s): One of: Anthropology 027a/b, Linguistics 288a/b, French 295, Spanish 303a or permission of Linguistics program.

Linguistics 186a/b, Introduction to Language and Gender
Description: This course explores the relationship between language and sex/gender systems from a critical linguistic perspective. Areas investigated include: language and gender stereotypes; gender variation in language usage; power and women’s status; and male vs. female communicative styles in different contexts. Women’s Studies 020E is recommended preparation but not required.
Antirequisite(s): Linguistics 286F/G.
Prerequisite(s): Anthropology 027a/b or Linguistics 027a/b, or at least 0.5 linguistics course approved by the program.

Linguistics 250F/G, Comparative Indo-European Linguistics
Description: A diachronic and synchronic study of the Indo-European languages with emphasis on the Comparative Method and typology, primarily of the languages spoken in Europe, both Western and Eastern. Students will write a research essay on structural or historical aspects of at least one Indo-European language.
Antirequisite(s): Comparative Literature and Culture 150F/G.
