ENGLISH LANGUAGE AND LITERATURE


Admission Requirements
Program

In second year a student must take at least two Honors English courses. In each subsequent year a student must take at least two senior English courses. Students who do not achieve a 70% average with no mark less than 60% in their principal courses at the end of the third year may be admitted to fourth year only by permission of the Department.

For the honors degree in English Language and Literature, a student must have twenty full-course equivalents; ten of these will be senior English courses (at least nine at the Honors level) and will include two of English 201F/G, 203F/G, 204F/G, 282F/G, 283F/G, OR the former English 200. and at least one full-course equivalent at the 400-level.

The distribution of Honors English courses is as follows:

Two additional senior English full-course equivalents not already chosen (one of which may be a 100-level essay course)

Additional honors or 100-level courses may be chosen as options

French or a foreign language is strongly recommended for students who intend to apply to graduate schools or professional programs.

Note: Students enrolled in the program prior to September 1990 should consult the English Department.

Note: English 117 (Reading Popular Culture), and courses in Writing cannot be counted as principal courses in fulfilling Honors program requirements.
