FOUR-YEAR BSc HONORS ZOOLOGY

Admission Requirements

Completion of the requirements for a Three-Year BSc in Biology with the appropriate grades and average for entry into honors programs and with the required prerequisites for at least four 400-level Zoology-based half-courses offered by the Department of Biology (see list below). Students are encouraged to have taken some of the courses required for graduation from Honors Zoology (see below) before entering the program. All fourth year Zoology programs must be approved by a Zoology program counselor in the Department of Biology.

Graduation Requirements

Students graduating from Honors Zoology are expected to have a broad understanding of the composition of the animal kingdom and to have had some training in each of the major areas of zoological strength of the Department of Biology. To meet this expectation, students graduating from Honors Zoology must have taken the three required half-courses in Group A (below) and at least one-half course from each of Groups B, C, and D (below).

Group A (three required half-courses)
Group B (a half-course in Cell and Developmental Biology)

    at least one half-course chosen from: Biology 314a, 316a, 326F/G, 338a, the former 390a

Group C (a half-course in Comparative and Environmental Physiology)
Group D (a half-course in Population Biology)
Fourth Year

Ten half-courses at the 300- or 400-level, offered by the Department of Biology, must be taken in the fourth year. Of the ten half-course equivalents, a minimum of four must be at the 400-level, chosen from the following list:

Biology 422b (formerly Zoology 422b), Biology 423F/G (formerly Zoology 423F/G), Biology 426F (formerly Zoology 426a), Biology 428a (formerly Zoology 428a), Biology 434b (formerly Zoology 434b) Biology 436F/G (formerly Zoology 436b), Biology 438G (formerly Zoology 438b), Biology 440G (formerly Zoology 440b), Biology 441F (formerly Zoology 441a), Biology 443G (formerly Zoology 453b), Biology 445a (formerly Zoology 455a), Biology 450F/G (formerly Zoology 450a/b), Biology 451F/G (formerly Zoology 451b), Biology 457Z (formerly Zoology 420y), Biology 458Z (formerly Zoology 421y), Biology 459F (or the former Biology 444a, or Zoology 444a).

The remainder must be either at the 300- level or be 200-level requirements for graduation from the program that have not been previously taken. A maximum of one full course (whose content is related to the emphasis of the proposed program) offered by other departments may, with the approval of the Zoology Honors program counselor, be substituted for one of the Zoology-based courses listed above and offered by the Department of Biology.

Note

A non-Zoology based course cannot replace any of the required minimum of four 400-level Zoology-based courses.

The honors year continues the objectives of the Three-Year degree; it provides a broadly based education in Animal Biology or more specialized training for a particular career. It is important for potential Honors Zoology students to get the help of the Department's advisors in choosing appropriate courses during their second and third years.
