The Third Year (HBA1)
The third year of the undergraduate program in Business Administration consists of an integrated set of 9 courses (6 full-courses, 2 half-courses and 1 quarter course) equivalents designed to give a basic understanding of the functions and the interrelationships of the major areas of management, as well as to develop problem-solving and action-planning skills. No substitute for any of the above courses is permitted under any circumstances. The initial weeks allow students to acclimatize themselves to the School and to the learning process. Groups of five or six students are assigned to learning teams during the first two weeks of classes. This process serves to help students quickly meet new classmates and to share individual analysis of cases prepared for the next day. Students then form their own study groups to pursue the team approach. With organizational activity increasingly taking place in groups, this experience is critical for every effective manager.
The Fourth Year (HBA2)
The fourth year consists of a total of 5.75 full course equivalents. These required and elective courses allow students to design a personal program of study best suited to their individual needs. A few students concentrate mainly in one functional area; most perfer to select courses from several areas. Business 415q, 428a, 430, 466a
3.5 elective courses chosen from 400 level Business courses
1.0 from the faculties of Arts and Humanities, Science, Social Science, or Law, may be substituted for a Business elective with the permission of the HBA Program Director.
Additional Course Offerings
The School offers four additional courses, Business Administration 020, 257, 299 (for Engineering Science students only), and 295F (for Science students only) for students considering a business program or wishing to acquire basic training in management techniques.
Progression and Graduation Requirements
To be eligible for registration in the fourth year, third year students must meet the following requirements: - Pass all courses
- Achieve an overall average of 70% or better in all HBA1, as defined by the program.
To be eligible for graduation, fourth year students must meet the following requirements: - Pass all courses
- Achieve an overall average of at least 70% over all courses taken in HBA2, as defined by the program.
Students may be "passed by faculty action" by a majority of the teaching faculty attending the HBA1 or HBA2 grades meetings. Pass with Distinction - A student who achieves an overall average of at least 80.0% on a full year's work in HBA1 or HBA2 as defined by the program, will be designated as "Pass with Distinction" on UWO transcripts. Graduation "With Distinction" - A student who achieves an overall average of 80.0% and no grade lower than 70% on the entire program (HBA1 and HBA2) with no failed courses will receive the designation "Graduation with Distinction" on UWO diplomas and transcripts. Dean's Honor List - A student who completes a full year's work as defined by the program and attains grades in the top 10% of the class will be designated as Dean's Honor List on UWO transcripts. The average excludes exchange and non-Ivey courses. Ivey Scholar - A student who achieves Dean's Honor List status in both HBA1 and HBA2 will be designated as an Ivey Scholar on UWO transcripts. Gold Medal - The GSW Gold Medal will be awarded to a student with the highest average, who has completed a full year of courses in both HBA1 and HBA2 as defined by the program. The average is calculated by a simple average of the student's HBA1 average and the HBA2 average over all courses taken at Ivey. The average excludes exchange and non-Ivey courses. If an HBA student is found in breach of the Ivey Student Code of Professional Conduct, in addition to any penalty that may be imposed, the student may be ineligible to receive any Ivey honors designation and the Gold Medal.
Unsatisfactory Standing
The teaching faculty of each year of the program meet to consider individually the case of each student who has not met the requirements either for progression or graduation. Given the academic performance of the student and all other information available to the Faculty,
A third year student may be:
- Required to withdraw from the program
- Passed by Faculty action
- Admitted to the fourth year following withdrawal
- Required to follow a course of action deemed appropriate by the Faculty,
A fourth year student may be:
- Required to withdraw from the program
- Passed by Faculty action
- Permitted to do a program of remedial work
- Required to follow a course of action deemed appropriate by the Faculty.
Appeals Procedures
An appeal is a request for an exemption from a Senate regulation or a request that a grade on a particular piece of work or a final standing in a course or program be changed. The successive levels for an appeal are as follows: - consultation with the faculty member
- submission of a written request to the Dean, through the Program Director
- submission of a written application to the Senate Review Board Academic
Each step of the appeals procedure should be initiated as soon as possible, but no later than six weeks from the date of the action or decision giving rise to the appeal. Also see the STUDENT ACADEMIC APPEALS section.
