Film Studies 020E, An Introduction to Film
Description: A broad introduction to the study of films that will teach the basic vocabulary of film studies, provide an overview of the types of film and videos being made, and examine various critical approaches. By considering a variety of texts, students will learn to analyze and discuss film and video.

Description: This course explores films produced in East-Central Europe (including the cinemas of Hungary, Poland, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Romania, and the former Soviet republics and the former Yugoslavia) in relation to the historical and social conditions of cultural production, and in relation to individual directors and artists.

Description: This course will examine recent Spanish cinema from the political transition after Franco's death to the present, with particular emphasis on the eighties and nineties. We will explore cinematic reaction to post-Franco liberties, "the Almodóvar phenomenon," gender, sexuality and regional cinema.

Description: This course explores the representation of gender and sexuality in mainstream Hollywood and European art cinema. The course introduces a number of theoretical frameworks which are used to probe issues such as gender stereotypes, the relationship between gender and genre, feminist counter cinema, queer studies, identification, pleasure and spectatorship.

Description: This course examines developments in film theory since 1968. Beginning with neo-formalist assessment of classical Hollywood cinema's narrational principles and procedures, the course will cover some central debates affecting film theory over the past thirty-five years including ideological questions, apparatus theory, feminism, psychoanalytic theory, postmodernism, queer theory and postcolonialism.

Description: This course will introduce students to theories of nationalism and national identity, to determine how they influence our understanding of national cinemas. Description: Individual instruction in the selection of a topic, the preparation of materials, and the writing of a thesis. Students who wish to take this course must apply to the Chair of the Department. The course is restricted to students in fourth year of an Honors Specialization in Film Studies.
Prerequisite(s): Registration in fourth year of an Honors Specialization in Film Studies and permission of the Department. Permission is normally granted only to students having at least a high "B" average.
