Medical Biophysics 302E, General Biophysics
Description: The physics of blood flow and vascular mechanics, interactions at biological interfaces, and diffusive and convective transport. Experimental methodology is emphasized including quantitative stereology and medical imaging using ultrasound, digital subtraction angiography, and magnetic resonance spectroscopy and imaging, as well as a six-week laboratory research project designed by the student.
Antirequisite(s): Medical Biophysics 333F, 335G, the former Biology 302, Medical Biophysics 302.
Prerequisite(s): Biology 022 or 023; Calculus 050a/b; Physics 020, 024, 028a/b and 029a/b, or the former Physics 022 or 025.
Open to second-year students with an overall average of at least a 78% in first year.

Medical Biophysics 303E, Biophysical Analysis
Description: The application of physics, engineering, and mathematical methods to biological mechanisms. Emphasis on modeling, and on problem solving. Special topics include linear systems and biological feedback, analysis of microvascular blood flow, modeling of drug kinetics and oxygen diffusion to heart valves, cornea and tumors, Fourier analysis in imaging systems.
Antirequisite(s): The former Biology 303, Medical Biophysics 303.
Prerequisite(s): Calculus 050a/b plus one of 051a/b or 081a/b, or Applied Mathematics 026; Physics 020, 024, 028a/b and 029a/b, or the former Physics 022 or 025. Open to second-year students with an overall average of at least 78% in first year.

Medical Biophysics 330F, Human and Animal Biomechanics
Description: The mechanical properties of biological structures and fluids in relation to function: deformability, strength, and visco-elasticity of hard and flexibile tissues, modes of loading and failure. Special topics include mechanics of synovial joints, concussion and head injuries, animal flight, and aquatic propulsion.
Antirequisite(s): The former Biology 330a, Medical Biophysics 330a.

Medical Biophysics 331G, Human and Animal Interactions with the Physical Environment
Description: Examination of the physical processes in the environment that affect life, and physical processes in animals and man that enable them to survive. Topics include pressure, temperature, light, gravity, sound, ionizing and nonionizing radiation. Special topics: heat exchange, vision and hearing, altitude and diving, the space environment, and radiation tolerance.
Antirequisite(s): The former Biology 331G.
Prerequisite(s): Biology 022 or 023; Physics 020, 024, 028a/b and 029a/b, or the former Physics 022or 025. Open to second-year students with an overall average of at least 70% in first year.

Description: An introduction to linear systems and control theory as applied to organ system regulation and adaptation. Emphasis is placed on biophysical models of the respiratory and cardiovascular systems, and interactions with medical devices.

Medical Biophysics 409a/b, Digital Image Processing
Description: An introduction to the fundamentals of digital image processing including image representation, 2D linear systems theory and Fourier analysis, digital filtering and segmentation. Concentrates on practical techniques through an exposure to image processing applications in industry, science and medicine and assignments based on MATLAB numeric computation and visualization environments.

Description: Nature and effects of ionizing radiation on biomolecular structures and living cells, applied radiobiology and radionuclides. Genetic effects of ionizing radiation and methods of protection. Radiobiological applications in modern cancer therapy.

Medical Biophysics 470a/b/y, Hemodynamics
Description: Fundamentals of steady and pulsatile blood flow in tubes and blood vessels. Hemodynamic models and the role of non-dimensional parameters. Measurement of pressure, flow velocity and distribution. Characteristics of flow in large and small blood vessels: geometric factors, measurement techniques and physical alteration of flow by disease.

Description: Physical principles underlying medical imaging. Modalities covered: x-rays, computed tomography, nuclear medicine, ultra-sound, and magnetic resonance imaging. Topics include signal generation, detection and the associated mathematics to produce medically useful images, and factors affecting resolution and sensitivity.

Medical Biophysics 480, Projects in Biophysics
Description: Major laboratory course in experimental biophysics for fourth-year Honors or Honors Specialization Medical Biophysics. The three components are: a major experimental project (topic and advisor chosen in consultation with the student), scientific communication (student presentation and reports), and electronic information processing (data capture, computer analysis of biophysical signals).
Antirequisite(s): The former Biophysics 480.
Prerequisite(s): Permission of the Department.
