DIPLOMA IN LABOUR RELATIONS

The Diploma in Labour Relations is designed to provide students with a solid foundation in the theory that drives the field of labour relations. The Diploma will consist of nine full courses: eight diploma half certificate-credit courses of the Certificate in Labour Relations, plus the five full degree-credit equivalents listed below.

Enrolment will be limited and competitive, and will be determined on a case-by-case basis by the Faculty of Social Science.

All students will be admitted to the Diploma in Labour Relations according to the policies and guidelines for admission to the University. Non-UWO students must first apply to The University of Western Ontario through the Ontario University Application Centre in Guelph, Ontario. In addition, prospective students must also complete the application form for the Diploma in Labour Relations provided by Continuing Studies at Western. Application forms are available through Continuing Studies at Western. Students who are currently enrolled at UWO are only required to complete a Continuing Studies at Western.

Application Deadline: March 1 to be considered for admission for the Fall term.

PROGRAM

The Diploma will consist of the equivalent of nine full course equivalents.

Sociology 169 - Sociology of Work and Industry (1.0 Credit)
Political Science 211E - Business and Government (1.0 Credit)
Administrative and Commercial Studies 352F/G - Industrial Relations and Labour Studies (0.5 Credit)
Sociology 173a/b - Problems in Mass Society (0.5 Credit)

Total required degree-credits: 3.5

Plus 3 of the following Electives:

Sociology 469F/G - The Labour Process and Labour Relations (0.5 Credit)
Administrative and Commercial Studies 355F/G - Women in the Canadian Workplace or History 182a/b - Women in the Workforce (0.5 Credit)
Administrative and Commercial Studies 275a/b - Business Law I (0.5 Credit)
Economics 156a/b - Labour Economics: Bargaining (Prerequisite: Economics 020) (0.5 Credit)
Philosophy 162F/G - Business Ethics or Philosophy 283F/G - The Ethics of Professional Relationships (0.5 Credit)

Total elective degree-credits: 1.5

Total degree-credit = 5.0 full credits

Total diploma-credit = 4.0 full credit equivalents

Total credits required for completion of Diploma in Labour Relations (degree-credit + diploma-credit) = 9.0 full credit equivalents
