Microbiology and Immunology 2500A/B - Biology of Infection and Immunity
The biology of selected pathogens and the diseases they cause. An examination of host/parasite relationships and strategies used by microbes to survive in their hosts. Aspects of clinical disease will be studied including diagnosis and treatment based on modern molecular techniques and the nature of host immune responses.
Prerequisite(s): Either Biology 1001A or 1201A and either Biology 1002B or 1202B, or one of the former Biology 1222 or 1223.

Microbiology and Immunology 3100A - Microbiology
This course will cover fundamental aspects of the ecology, structure, physiology, replication and genetics of bacteria and viruses. Topics include the pathogenesis of microorganisms, their role in disease, antibiotics, gene therapy vectors and vaccines.

Elementary concepts of innate and adaptive immunity, structure and function of the immune system, antigens and antibodies, genetic basis of the immune response, humoral and cellular immunity, immunological tolerance, organ and tissue transplantation, allergy and autoimmune disease.

Microbiology and Immunology 3610F - Microbiology Laboratory
Laboratory techniques used in the broad discipline of microbiology, including bacteriology and virology. Laboratory exercises include the staining, biochemical characteristics and identification of live bacteria, plus genetic techniques used to study microorganisms. This course runs parallel to, and applies basic principles acquired in, Microbiology and Immunology 3100A.

The host immune response to microorganisms, the biology of microorganisms with disease-causing potential and clinical aspects of infectious diseases will be covered. The role and professional attitude of the nurse in prevention, detection and control of infections will be emphasized.

A course offering an integrated view of the genetics and biochemistry of bacteria and their role in pathogenesis. Lectures and student presentations cover topics in bacterial pathogenesis focusing on medically important organisms.

Microbiology and Immunology 4200B - Molecular Virology
Cellular and molecular mechanisms of virus reproduction including approaches to the analysis of virus structure, virus-cell interaction, virus infection, oncogenes and viral transformation of cells to cancer cells. Various examples will be used from bacterial, plant and animal viruses.

Microbiology and Immunology 4300A - Advanced Immunology
This course covers advanced concepts in organization and regulation of the immune system. Includes structure and function of immunoglobulins and other immune cell receptors, B and T lymphocyte interactions and signal transduction, cellular regulation by cytokines, immunological effector mechanisms, and diseases of the immune system.

Microbiology and Immunology 4970E - Research Project and Seminar
The major laboratory course for students in Honors Microbiology and Immunology. The course consists of lectures on laboratory safety, biosafety, use of animals in research, scientific integrity; an independent research project (topic and advisor chosen by consultation between student and faculty); scientific communication (two seminars and a written report).
Antirequisite(s): Biochemistry 4483E.
Prerequisite(s): the former Microbiology and Immunology 3600G with a mark of at least 70%, or Microbiology and Immunology 3610F and 3620G with a mark in each of at least 70%. Enrolment is limited, and is available only to students in Year 4 of the Honors Specializations in Microbiology and Immunology and Biochemistry of Infection and Immunity. Students in the Honors Specialization in Biochemistry of Infection and Immunity may substitute Biochemistry 3380G with a mark of at least 70% in place of Microbiology and Immunology 3600G as a prerequisite.
