This course examines Jewish women artists and patrons of the twentieth century to understand their contributions to the visual arts in the decades preceding and following the Holocaust. Drawing on their artworks, we explore how they struggled with and reacted to anti-Semitism and sexism in the art world and society.

Women's Studies 2157A/B - The Status of Women in Artistic Couples
A look at a variety of political, social, and economic factors relating to women’s status generally, and within the context of the visual arts during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. This slide-illustrated course will examine French sculptors Camille Claudel and Auguste Rodin, Mexican painters Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera, and Canadian painters Mary Pratt and Christopher Pratt, among others.

This course examines images of women created by women artists from the sixteenth to late twentieth centuries. General social conditions of various periods, artistic convention, and artist biography will be discussed in order to illuminate the nonconformity of biblical, historical, and fictional images of women which women artists rendered in a variety of media.

In the past African women were powerful leaders, strong economic contributors, and respected members of their extended families. This course will examine these historical roles as well as factors that undermined African womenís status and changed gender relations, such as slavery, economic forces and colonialism.
