Japanese (A)
Note: Students unsure of their language level should contact the Department of Modern Languages about a placement test. In addition, all students, including first-year students, may obtain special permission to register in a higher course if they have sufficient background in the language.
Japanese 1036 - Japanese for Beginners
An intensive introduction to spoken and written Japanese with emphasis on the development of communicative skills. Intended for students with little or no previous knowledge of Japanese. Prepares students for progression to Japanese 2260. Note that students who have successfully completed Grade 12 U Japanese or equivalent cannot take this course for credit.
Antirequisite(s): Grade 12 U Japanese, or Japanese 1050, 1051A/B, 1052A/B.

Japanese 2260 - Intensive Intermediate Japanese
This course is designed to build on all four language skills (reading, writing, listening, and speaking) in Japanese developed in earlier courses. Emphasis is on the expansion of Japanese vocabulary, grammatical structures and kanji. Oral/aural practice is supplemented by weekly language laboratory sessions. Prepares students for progression to Japanese 3350.
Antirequisite(s): Japanese 2250.
Prerequisite(s): Japanese 1036 or permission of the Department.
