| Philosophy 137E Social and Political Philosophy |

Controversial issues in social and political thought are explored, with attention to the views of important political philosophers from Plato to Marx, along with contemporary writers. Sample topics: social justice, the individual and state authority, concepts of democracy. Independent critical thinking about these matters is stressed. |
