PROGRAM FOR REGISTERED NURSES

Admission Requirements

Possession of minimum admission requirements does not guarantee admission.

Priority consideration shall be given, all other things being equal, first to Canadian citizens and permanent residents from Ontario, and second to Canadian citizens and permanent residents from other Canadian provinces. Special consideration may be given to a student supported by the Canadian International Development Agency or a similar agency.

Professional Admission Requirements

Current Certificate of Registration as Registered Nurse in Ontario

Academic Admission Requirements

College cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.0 or higher.

Admissions Appeals Procedure

Following the final date for application, applicants may file any supplementary information relevant to their application with the Registrar's Office.

Decisions of the Admissions Committee are final.

Applicants may request a review of the decision of the Admissions Committee, provided that such a request is based upon significant new information, pertinent to the application, and not available to the applicant prior to May 1. This request must be filed with the Dean's Office not later than 2 weeks after the issuance of the original decision.

Enquiries and Applications for Admission

  1. All enquiries and requests for application forms should be addressed to the Programs Office, School of Nursing, The University of Western Ontario, London, Ontario, N6A 5C1, or to the Registrar's Office.
  2. The application deadline is February 15 for the class that begins the following September.

Program

Enrolment in courses is limited and in some cases the demand exceeds that limit. The University is unable to guarantee registration in any particular course and reserves the right to withdraw course offerings.

Mandatory Nursing Courses (6.0 full course equivalents): 361a, 362a, 391, 392, 318a/b, 319a/b, 412, 499

Support Course

(i) Science Courses:

Physiology 020 or 130

One of Foods and Nutrition 021, Microbiology and Immunology 106, or Biology 362

(ii) Nursing Electives:

2.0 courses to be selected from existing nursing* and health sciences courses. Some of these courses have limited or restricted enrolment.

(iii) Open Electives:

2.0 courses at 100-level or above.

Note: Post-diploma certificates obtained at post-secondary institutions or through the Canadian Nurses' Association National Certification Programs (e.g. clinical nursing specialties), may qualify for advanced standing, provided that appropriate documentation is submitted for approval by the Program Chair.

Program Requirements

The program for Registered Nurses must be completed within 5 academic years calculated from the registration in the first nursing course.

Students may register in this program on a full-time or part-time basis. Students should consult with Western's RN BScN Program Office for program planning and registration for each year or term.

Throughout the program, students will be expected to meet the progression requirements and maintain clinical skills from prerequisite nursing courses at a satisfactory level.
