FACULTY OF SCIENCE

FOUR-YEAR BSc HONORS ZOOLOGY

Admission Requirements

Completion of the requirements for a 3-year BSc in Biology with the appropriate grades and average for entry into honors programs and with the required prerequisites for at least four 400-level half-courses offered by the Department of Zoology. Students are encouraged to have taken some of the courses required for graduation from Honors Zoology (see below) before entering the program. All fourth year Zoology programs must be approved by a Department counsellor.

Graduation Requirements

Students graduating from Honors Zoology are expected to have a broad understanding of the composition of the animal kingdom and to have had some training in each of the major areas of strength of the Department of Zoology. To meet this expectation, students graduating from Honors Zoology must have taken the three required half-courses in Group A (below) and at least one-half course from each of Groups B, C, and D (below).

Group A (three required half-courses)

Biology 271a, Biology 284a, and either Biology 240b or Biology 328a

Group B (a half-course in Cell and Developmental Biology)

at least one half-course chosen from: Biology 314a, 316a, 326a, 338a, 390a

Group C (a half-course in Comparative and Environmental Physiology)

at least one half-course chosen from: Biology 272b, 310, 322a, 351b, 370b

Group D (a half-course in Population Biology)

at least one half-course chosen from: Biology 335b, 336a, 345a, 346b, 355b

Fourth Year

Ten half-courses at the 300- or 400-level, offered by the Department of Zoology, must be taken in the fourth year. Of the ten half-course equivalents, a minimum of four must be at the 400-level. The remainder must be either at the 300- level or be 200-level requirements for graduation from the program that have not been previously taken. A maximum of one full course (whose content is related to the emphasis of the proposed program) offered by other departments may, with the approval of the Zoology Department undergraduate advisors, be substituted for Zoology courses.

Note

A non-Zoology course cannot replace any of the required minimum of four 400-level Zoology courses.

The honors year continues the objectives of the 3-year degree; it provides a broadly based education in Animal Biology or more specialized training for a particular career. It is important for potential Honors Zoology students to get the help of the Department's advisors in choosing appropriate courses during their second and third years.
