HONORS PROGRAM

Admission Requirements

First year program in Arts, Science or Social Science including Sociology 020 or 021E and four other courses as principal courses. At the end of the first year, students must have an overall average of 70% with no mark less than 60%. Students may be admitted to the Honors Sociology program after their second or third year provided they have all of the following:

  1. an overall average of 70% with no failures in the last ten previous courses;
  2. a 70% average with no mark less than 60% in their principal courses after first year;
  3. an average of 70% in all Sociology courses beyond Sociology 020 or 021E.

Students are encouraged to enrol as honors students as soon as they are eligible. It is expected that Honors Sociology students will take their principal courses at Western: 230, 231, 232E, 233, 234E, 237, 239, 240E, 300a/b, 302a/b and 404F/G.

Second and Third Years

Sociology 231 - required in second year
300a/b and 302a/b - required in third year
Sociology 230 or 240E
Three additional full courses in Sociology (or their equivalent) at the 200-level
Four options. (Sociology 232E, 233 or 234E, 237 (or the former 236) or 239 may be taken as options if not taken as principal courses)

It is strongly recommended that students complete at least a half-course in Mathematics before registering in Sociology 231. The mathematics can be one of the following or their equivalents: a secondary school mathematics credit (Calculus, or Algebra and Geometry, or Finite Mathematics); or, at university, Mathematics 012a/b or 017a/b or the former Applied Mathematics 022.

Fourth Year

Sociology 404F/G
One and one-half courses in Sociology at the 300-400 level (Sociology 405F/G is strongly recommended)
