This course uses several of the most famous Victorian murders and murderers to explore broader issues raised by the context of the crimes: detective policing, the selection of judges, press coverage of crime, the black market in corpses, insanity and criminal responsibility, insurance fraud, child abuse, and state-sanctioned killing.
