Honours Specialization HONOURS SPECIALIZATION IN GEOGRAPHY AND ENVIRONMENT AND COMMERCIAL AVIATION MANAGEMENT - BA

Enrollment in the Honours Specialization in Geography and Environment and Commercial Aviation Management module is limited. Meeting of minimal requirements does not guarantee admission.

The Honours Specialization in Geography and Environment and Commercial Aviation Management module allows students to select a Flight Training option which provides them the opportunity to obtain a Commercial Pilot's License. Students interested in pursuing the Flight Option must obtain a valid Transport Canada Category 1 Medical Certificate.

Admission Requirements


Completion of first-year requirements with no failures. Students must have an average of at least 73% and no mark below 60% in 3.0 principal courses, including 1.0 course from Geography and Environment 1100, Geography and Environment 1200A/B, Geography and Environment 1300A/B, Geography and Environment 1400F/G, Geography and Environment 1500F/G, Geography and Environment 2131A/B, Geography and Environment 2132A/B, Geography and Environment 2133A/B, Geography and Environment 2152F/G, Geography and Environment 2153A/B, Environmental Science 1021F/G, 0.5 course from Computer Science 1025A/B, Computer Science 1026A/B, Computer Science 1032A/B, plus 1.5 additional courses.

All students applying to this program must submit a supplementary application form to the Department of Geography and Environment.

After first year, students may apply for admission to the HONOURS SPECIALIZATION IN GEOGRAPHY AND ENVIRONMENT AND COMMERCIAL AVIATION MANAGEMENT upon completion of first-year requirements with no failures. Students must have an average of at least 73% on, and no grade less than 60% in any of the 3.0 principal courses:

1.0 course from: Geography and Environment 1100, Geography and Environment 1300A/B, Geography and Environment 1400F/G, Geography and Environment 1500F/G, Environmental Science 1021F/G.
0.5 course from: Computer Science 1025A/B, Computer Science 1026A/B, Computer Science 1032A/B.
1.5 course numbered 1000-1999.

*If upper-year students have not completed 1.0 courses listed above, they may select one or two courses from: Geography and Environment 2131A/B, Geography and Environment 2132A/B, Geography and Environment 2133A/B, Geography and Environment 2152F/G, and/or Geography and Environment 2153A/B in making up the 1.0 admission requirement, as long as they were completed with a grade of at least 60%. Senior qualifying entry course(s) cannot be counted for subsequent program credit.

After second year, students applying for the HONOURS SPECIALIZATION IN GEOGRAPHY AND ENVIRONMENT AND COMMERCIAL AVIATION MANAGEMENT must have:

  • achieved an average of at least 73% on the last 5.0 courses;
  • achieved an average of 73% on the 3.0 principal courses required for the module;
  • maintained a cumulative modular average of 70%
  • obtained a minimum grade of 60% in each course required for the module;
  • obtained a passing grade in each elective course;
  • a minimum cumulative average of 65%.

Progression Requirements

To remain in the HONOURS SPECIALIZATION IN GEOGRAPHY AND ENVIRONMENT AND COMMERCIAL AVIATION MANAGEMENT, students must have:

  • maintained a cumulative modular average of 70%;
  • obtained a minimum grade of 60% in each course required for the module;
  • obtained a passing grade in each elective course;
  • maintained a cumulative average of 65%.

Students who fail to meet these progression requirements may be eligible to apply to the SPECIALIZATION IN GEOGRAPHY AND COMMERCIAL AVIATION MANAGEMENT or to another program.

Graduation Requirements

To graduate from the HONOURS SPECIALIZATION IN GEOGRAPHY AND ENVIRONMENT AND COMMERCIAL AVIATION MANAGEMENT, students must achieve a minimum cumulative modular average of 70% with a minimum mark of 60% in each course, obtain a passing grade in each elective course, and maintain a minimum overall average of 65% on the 20.0 courses counted towards the HONOURS SPECIALIZATION IN GEOGRAPHY AND ENVIRONMENT AND COMMERCIAL AVIATION MANAGEMENT Degree. Students with advanced standing must achieve an overall average of 65% on courses completed at Western.

All students require 2.0 designated essay courses (E, F or G; at least 1.0 of which must be a senior course numbered 2000-4999) and 1.0 course from each of Categories A, B and C.
