Other - Non Modular Program HONOURS GEOPHYSICS PROGRAM - For Professional Registration - admission discontinued

Admission to this program is discontinued effective September 1, 2019. Students enrolled in the program will be allowed to graduate until August 31, 2023, upon fulfillment of the program requirements.

Students enrolled in this program who wish to change their enrolment to the new Honours Specialization in Geophysics – For Professional Registration must contact the Department of Earth Sciences.

Admission Requirements


Adherence to these programs will fulfill all course requirements for professional registration as set by the Association of Professional Geoscientists of Ontario (APGO) and the Canadian Council of Professional Geoscientists (CCPG). Programs require 4.5 Foundation Science courses. Students are responsible for ensuring course selections result in: fulfillment of current breadth requirements with at least 1.0 from each of category A and category B; and essay requirements, 2.0 courses, one of which may be the senior Earth Sciences 4490E thesis.

Module/Program Information


Required Courses 1st Year

The completion of first-year requirements with no failures. Students must have an average of at least 70% in the following

3.0 courses:

1.0 course from: Chemistry 1301A/B and Chemistry 1302A/B with an average of at least 60%, or the former Chemistry 1100A/B and the former Chemistry 1200B with an average of at least 60%.
1.0 course from: (Physics 1028A/B, Physics 1301A/B, Physics 1401A/B or Physics 1501A/B) and (Physics 1029A/B, Physics 1302A/B, Physics 1402A/B or Physics 1502A/B) with an average of at least 60%; or the former Physics 1026 with a minimum mark of 60%.
0.5 course from: Calculus 1000A/B, Calculus 1500A/B or the former Calculus 1100A/B, Mathematics 1225A/B. A minimum mark of 60% in the course required.
0.5 course from: Earth Sciences 1022A/B, Earth Sciences 1023A/B, Earth Sciences 1070A/B, Earth Sciences 1081A/B, Earth Sciences 1083F/G. A minimum mark of 60% in the course is required.

1.0 course from: Applied Mathematics 1201A/B, Biology 1001A, Biology 1002B, Biology 1201A, Biology 1202B, Calculus 1301A/B, Calculus 1501A/B, Computer Science 1025A/B, Computer Science 1026A/B, Computer Science 1027A/B, Mathematics 1600A/B or the former Linear Algebra 1600A/B, Mathematics 1228A/B, Mathematics 1229A/B, Statistical Sciences 1023A/B, Statistical Sciences 1024A/B. This requirement must be completed by the end of second year.

1.0 additional course from category A or category B.

Note: The Professional Geophysics Program requires Calculus 1000A/B or Calculus 1500A/B, or the former Calculus 1100A/B, and, if taken, a minimum average of 80% in Physics 1028A/B and Physics 1029A/B.

4.5 courses: Earth Sciences 2200A/B, Earth Sciences 2201A/B, Earth Sciences 2206A/B, Earth Sciences 2220A/B, Earth Sciences 2222A/B, Earth Sciences 2250Y, Earth Sciences 2260A/B, Calculus 2302A/B or Calculus 2502A/B, Calculus 2303A/B or Calculus 2503A/B.
0.5 course from category A or category B.


Required Courses to be completed in 3rd or 4th Year

10.0 courses:

5.5 courses: Earth Sciences 3320A/B, Earth Sciences 3321A/B, Earth Sciences 3323A/B, Earth Sciences 3340A/B, Earth Sciences 4420A/B, Earth Sciences 4421A/B, Earth Sciences 4423A/B, Earth Sciences 4451Z, Earth Sciences 4490E, Physics 2110A/B.
2.5 courses from: Earth Sciences 3341A/B, Earth Sciences 3370A/B, Earth Sciences 3371A/B, Earth Sciences 3372A/B, Earth Sciences 4424A/B, Earth Sciences 4440A/B, Earth Sciences 4462A/B, Earth Sciences 4470A/B, Earth Sciences 4472A/B, Mathematics 1600A/B or the former Linear Algebra 1600A/B, Applied Mathematics 2402A or the former Differential Equations 2402A, Mathematics 3124A/B, Geography 2220A/B, Geography 2330A/B, or Physics 2910F/G, the former Applied Mathematics 4129A/B.
2.0 courses of which at least 1.0 is at a senior level.

Notes:
1.  If Earth Sciences 1023A/B has been taken, Earth Sciences 2123F/G cannot be taken, and one additional 2000-level or above Earth Sciences course not otherwise required for the module must be taken as a substitute.

2. Geography courses will count towards your category A breadth requirement.
