FACULTY OF LAW

JOINT PROGRAMS AND SPECIAL PROGRAMS

CONCURRENT BESc/LLB PROGRAM

The concurrent BESc/LLB program allows students to complete bothe the BESc degree and the LLB degree in six years, instead of the seven years it takes if the the programs are pursured separately.

Successful applicants to concurrent program will enter first year law after completing two years of Engineering. After one year in the Law School, students in the concurrent program will take a combination of Engineering and Law courses in years four, five, and six.

Applicants to the concurrent program will apply at the beginning of the second year of Engineering to the Associate Dean of Engineering Sciences. They will also apply to the Faculty of Law, indicating their intention to pursue the concurrent program. To be eligible for the concurrent program, students must have a cumulative average of 80%, or stand in the top 10% of their class in their Department, in their first two years of Engineering.

Once enrolled in the program, students are required to maintain a minimum weighted average of 75% or B, and stand in the top half of the class in their Department. Students who fail to meet these progression requirements will be required to withdraw from the concurrent program. However, if these students have met the progression requirements of the regular program, they will be allowed to proceed to the next year of that program. These student will be allowed to complete both degrees, but will do so by completing one program and then pursuing the second program.

LLB/MBA Program

The LLB/MBA program is a four-year limited enrolment program administered jointly by the Faculty of Law and the Business School.

Designed for men and women who envision a career in those areas where business and law interact, this program is structured to allow students to complete both the LLB and MBA degrees in four calendar years instead of the normal five year period required if the LLB and MBA degrees are taken sequentially.

Application Information

Applications for admission to the LLB/MBA program consist of three parts:

  1. An application to the Faculty of Law for admission to the LLB program. Deadline: November 1.
  2. An application to the Business School for admission to the MBA program. Prerequisite: Undergraduate degree. Deadline: May 15.
  3. An application to the LLB/MBA program. Deadline: May 15.

Application forms for the Joint Program are available from the Admission Officer of the Business School and should be submitted to that School.

The only entry date for the LLB, MBA or LLB/MBA programs is in September of each year.

Applications for the LLB/MBA program may be completed in two ways. First, applicants may submit all three applications prior to first year, meeting all deadlines above. Second, applications for the LLB/MBA program may be submitted during the first year of the LLB or MBA program. However, as enrolment is limited, students who apply to enter the program after the completion of one year in either the LLB or MBA program have no assurance that they will be admitted to the Joint Program.

Structure of the Program

The program is administered on behalf of the Faculty of Law and the Business School by the two LLB/MBA Program Directors, one of whom is appointed by the Faculty of Law and the other by the Business School.

In the year in which students are enrolled in the first year of the MBA Program, they are registered in the Business School. In the other three years of the program, students are registered in the Faculty of Law.

First and Second Years

The first two years of the program consist of the regular first year LLB and MBA programs, taken as separate entities, with the sequence to be at the student's option. It is recommended, however, that students take the first year of the LLB program before the first year of the MBA program.

Third and Fourth Years

The third and fourth years of the program are devoted to required and elective courses in both the Business School and the Faculty of Law.

During these years, each student must take Business Policy (Business 600), which is the equivalent of two half-courses, The Political Environment of Canadian Business (Business 640a/b), a half-course, and two additional half-courses in the second year MBA curriculum.

The student must also take courses in the Faculty of Law totalling at least thirty-nine credit hours. These courses must include the compulsory core curriculum courses, a course relating to jurisprudence and the philosophy of law, or a course relating to law in the international setting, and a course requiring a written essay worth at least two credit hours. This last course may be an integrated piece of work that satisfies the essay requirement and includes a significant business component.

Beyond the requirements set out above, the student is free to choose three additional half-courses in the second year MBA curriculum, or further courses in the LLB curriculum, for a total of at least nine credit hours, or any combination thereof. Students' choices of elective courses are subject to the approval of the Program Directors, who must review proposed elective course selections to ensure that the objectives of the program are met.

The elective courses may not include courses of a dual law and business nature, such as Law and Accounting or Business Law.

Progression Standards

First and Second Years

Students in the first and second years of the program must complete each of those years with an academic standing in the upper one-third of the class.

Third and Fourth Years

In the third and fourth years of the program the following standards apply: For courses taken in the Business School, students may not receive a grade of less than "2" in any course and must receive a grade of "3" or better in at least one half- course.

For courses taken in the Faculty of Law, students may not receive a grade of "F" in any course and must receive a grade of "B-" or better in at least one course.

Failure to Meet Progression Standards

A student who fails to meet the progression standards in any year must withdraw from the program. If the progression standards of the LLB or MBA program have been satisfied, the student may continue in that program. If the progression standards for both the LLB and MBA programs are satisfied, the student may continue in either program and petition the Faculty or School whose program was not selected for permission to complete that program at a later date.

Honors

Dean's Honor List

Students in the program are considered for the Dean's Honor List at the Faculty of Law during their first year of Law and for the Dean's Honor List at the Business School during their first year of MBA courses. In each of the third and fourth years of the program, students are considered for the Dean's Honor List at the Faculty of Law on the basis of the courses taken in each particular year at the Faculty of Law. In the fourth year, students are also considered for the Dean's Honor List at the Business School on the basis of the Business courses taken during the last two years.

Eligibility is determined by the regulations in effect in the Faculty of Law and the Business School respectively.

Graduation with Distinction

Eligibility to graduate with distinction for each degree is determined by the regulations in effect in each Faculty.
