FACULTY OF SCIENCE
The Department of Statistical and Actuarial Sciences offers three honors programs, one in Statistics, one in Actuarial Science, and a joint program in Statistics and Actuarial Science. The Department also offers joint and combined honors programs with the departments of Computer Science, Economics and Mathematics (see below).
The Actuarial Science program, the joint Statistics and Actuarial Science program, the joint Actuarial Science and Computer Science program, the joint Actuarial Science and Mathematics program, and the joint Actuarial Science with Economics program (with proper choice of optional courses) prepare students to write Associateship examinations of the Society of Actuaries and the Casualty Actuarial Society. Further information on these examinations is available from the Department.
Prerequisites for any of these honors programs are: Statistical Sciences 023a/b and Calculus 050a/b and either 051a/b (minimum mark of 60%) or 081a/b (minimum mark of 70%), or Applied Mathematics 026, or the former Applied Mathematics 020, or 023a/b plus 024a/b, or the former Mathematics 027, in each case with a minimum mark of 60%, and completion of the first year program. Linear Algebra 040a/b is stongly recommended. (See the individual program descriptions for possible additional requirements.)
To qualify for the 4-year BA degree, a student must complete successfully one of these programs. Any of these programs will qualify a student for the 4-year BSc degree, provided the student's program includes at least twelve honors courses offered by the Faculty of Science.
Students who entered second or subsequent years of any of these honors programs prior to September 1998 may graduate under the requirements of either the old or the new programs.
Students interested in receiving the CORS Diploma of the Canadian Operational Research Society should include Statistical Sciences 325a/b and 437a/b as well as Applied Mathematics 326a/b in their course selections. See the administrator of the CORS Diploma program for further details.
The industry internship program provides students in the Statistical and Actuarial Science honors programs with the opportunity to gain work experience in the insurance, statistical or related consulting fields.
Students registered in the third year of an honors program in Actuarial Science, Statistics, or combinations thereof, are eligible to apply for the internship program. The internship will normally last anywhere from twelve to sixteen months, beginning after successful completion of third year. Upon completion of the work experience, the student is expected to return to the university to complete the final year of their program.
Students who wish to receive academic credit for the internship will, upon returning, take either Actuarial Science 399a/b or Statistical Sciences 399a/b. This half-course involves an oral presentation and written report on a project undertaken during the internship.
Students interested in the internship must register with the Department prior to accepting an internship position. Further information about the industry internship program is available from the Department.
