Admission into fourth year Biochemistry is open to students who have completed the requirements for 3-year BSc programs in Biology, Chemistry, or Biochemistry and Chemistry, with an overall average of 70% in the last two years, and an average of at least 70% in five senior biology or chemistry courses with no mark less than 60% in those five. (See BIOLOGY PROGRAMS (
) and CHEMISTRY (
).) The 3-year program must include the following, with a mark of 70% in each case:
Chemistry 213a/b plus 223b, or 253
Biology 280a, 380b, 381a, and 382b
Chemistry 224a/234b, or 254 is also required, but does not require a minimum mark of 70%
Note: Students entering the program from the 3-year BSc in Biology must have completed the following Year 1 mathematics requirement: one full course equivalent, chosen from Mathematics 030, or Calculus 050a/b plus one of the following: Calculus 051a/b, 081a/b, Linear Algebra 040a/b, Mathematics 028a/b; or the former Applied Mathematics 020, or 023a/b plus 024a/b, or the former Mathematics 027.
It is recommended that students take the prerequisites in the following order together with the other courses required in their specific programs:
Chemistry 213a/b and 223b or 253
Chemistry 224a and 234b or 254
Biology 380b, 381a, and 382b
The Department of Biochemistry should be consulted by all applicants.
Note:
If it has not been taken previously, a half-course in statistics (e.g., Statistical Sciences 222a/b) must be included as one of the above subsidiary courses.
